What you can do is multiply the denominator, or bottom number, by two. Remember, what you do to the top, you do to the bottom. 4*2 is 8 and 1*2 is 2. So, now your fraction has become 2/4. Also, 2 is equivalent to 3/1, because 2 divided by 1 is still 2.

If you multiply both, the numerator and denominator, by the same number, it will be equivalent because their ratio is similar. For instance, 3/12 is equivalent to 1/4 because 3/12 reduces to 1/4
