In the 1970s, the phenomenon of deindustrialization in the United States was most visible in the Midwest and the Northeast.  During this time, many business leaders moved their factories and business centers out of the Midwest and Northeast due to lower wages, anti-union policies, and lower tax rates in the southern states, particularly in the "sunbelt" area.
