Why did whites demand that segregation be legalized during this time

1. They were racist. They were offended that a color of person was even allowed to be near them.

2. They wanted to stay the dominant and powerful race. They were afraid that if segregation wasn't legalized, people of color would get "crazy" ideas and overpower them in number and other aspects of life.
