Well he was a war hero, he granted his supporters, friends, and illiterate farmers (who made up 90% of the population back then) with public office just so he could win their support. He was the first president to rise from a low social position to the White House by popular demand. In my opinion he wasn't a very good man tho. Anyway I hope this helps.
