When we don't look at our communication partner, we are denying recognition and are probably sending a negative, disconfirming message?

This is true, that a negative message is sent, because eye contact confirms to the other person that you are recognizing them speaking and are listening to what they are saying. It is always good to make eye contact when someone is speaking to not only show your respect but to communicate to them that they have your full attention.
