Explaining it can be easy. You can tell the numerator and denominator of 4/12 are even, right? I usually then divide the fraction by two to simplify it more. That will get us to 2/6. If you divide in half once more you'll end up with 1/3, which means that 4/12 is equivalent to 1/3. Hope this helps :)
