The square root of a number is a number that when multiplied by itself equals the original number.   Example:   The square root of 9 = 3.   Thus: 3 x 3 = 9.
Formula
A is the square root of B if:   A x A = B
so 
The square root of 3 is sqrt{3} = 1.7320508 
Thus:    1.7320508  x  1.7320508 = 3
