Who developed the ideas that contradicted Ptolemy's geocentric model of the universe?

The best and most commonly given answer here would be Nicolaus Copernicus. He is very often accredited as the person who has developed the heliocentric system/hypothesis. Copernicus lived from 1473 until 1543 and was a mathematician and astronomer profesionally. He devoted a lot of his time studying the motion of celestial bodies.
