One of the rules that Waverly’s family holds on to is the dependency that a daughter has on her mother. Waverly’s mother wants Waverly to be dependent on her for care and nurturing. Also, holding on to Asian values is another rule that Waverly’s family holds on to. They don’t want Waverly to be Americanized. Also, the family holds on to the rule that males should be higher achievers than females.
