When you are mixing reagents in a separatory funnel it is
important to vent it normally and do so in a method so that is it is not
venting towards anybody. Also be certain to take out the stopper when draining
the lower layer. If you do not take out the stopper, the pressure will not be correct,
and the liquid will not pour out.
