Find the value of x if B is between A and C, AB = 4x – 9, BC = 3x + 5 and AC = 17.

If A,B and C lie on the same line:

4x- 9 + 3x+5 = 17

7x = 21

x = 3

AB + BC = AC
4x - 9 + 3x + 5 = 17
7x - 4 = 17
add 4 to both sides
7x = 21
divide both sides by 7
x = 3
