We will set the variable "y" as our missing number.

48 = 2×2×2×2×y
       where
2 × 2 × 2 × 2 = 4 × 4 = 16

Thus:
48 = 16×y

Divide by 16 on both sides.

48÷16 = (16 × y)÷16
          or
[tex] \frac{48}{16} [/tex] = [tex] \frac{16y}{16} [/tex]

Thus:
3 = y

The missing number is 3.
