In order to find the line segment that can be an image of side AD using just translation, let's draw the square ABCD first:

Since the only side that is parallel to AD is the side BC, so the line segment BC is the only line segment that can be an image of AD using just translation.

Any other line segments would need a rotation in order to be an image of AD.
