In maths, if you are dealing with integers numbers, you are allowed to use negative numbers, this is not a mistake.

A negative number represents an opposite of a number. Just like we have positive number that are greater than 0, negative numbers represents the ones opposite the the positive ones, meaning they are less than 0.
