Carbon dioxide reacts with seawater to form carbonic acid, which releases hydrogen ions, reducing pH.The additional hydrogen ions released by carbonic acid bind to carbonate (CO32-) to form bicarbonate (HCO3–), decreasing the amount of carbonate in the water.
