Yes, as the strongest of the species continue to survive (which is what natural selection is all about) they can mutate causing improved features and eventually new species (note that this happens over hundreds of thousands of years.

An example is the giraffe. It evolved from a type of horse who’s neck wasn’t long enough to reach the leaves on trees. Therefore, those born with longer necks were more likely to live, and the process of natural selection helped form giraffes as we know them today.
