Since the exponents are positive integers, from the associativity of multiplication, it follows that for any positive integers m and n
 [tex]b^{m} * b^{n} = b^{m+n} [/tex]
therefore,
 [tex]2^3* 2^5 = 2^{5+3} = 2^8 = 256[/tex]
