Pearl Harbor. On December 7, 1941, the Japanese attacked the Hawaiian military base, Pearl Harbor. That attack drew the attention that isolation was no longer an option, and the U.S. needed to intervene. Pearl Harbor was also the first attack on U.S. soil since the War of 1812.
