Because both equations are equal to y, you can set the equations equal to each other.

2x+5= x+3
-x -x
x+5=3
-5 -5
x= -2

Then, you can substitute -2 to any equation to find x.

y= (-2)+3 y= 2(-2)+5
y= 1 y= -4+5
y=1
