When polymers are broken down into monomers, the body uses those monomers for a number of activities. Some of them include protein construction and respiration.

For proteins, the monomers are amino acids. Polymerization occurs at ribosomes. Usually about 20 types of amino acid monomers are used to produce proteins.

The process of polymers breaking down to monomers is called hydrolysis.
