Cavelier de La Salle was a French explorer who hoped to use the Ohio River to find the Mississippi River. The Ohio river meets the Mississippi river at Cairo in the state of Illinois. He wanted to be the first person to find the Northwest passage and build a colony at the mouth of the river Mississippi. He wanted to find the junction of Gulf of Mexico and the Mississippi river.
