An adjective is normally used to describe a noun. (Ex. The girl ran.) Ran would be the adjective because it's describing what the noun (the girl) did. Adjectives are also used to modify nouns. (Ex. Cloudy day) The adjective (cloudy) modified the noun (day) to describe it more.
